Electronic invoicing (E-Billing) will be mandatory in Germany from 2025. We support you with the implementation and answer your questions: How does invoicing in XML format work? Do I need new software?

We will explain and show you how to implement this in your company.

What is an e-invoice

A PDF is not an e-invoice

Companies must be able to receive and process B2B e-invoices by January 1, 2025.

An e-invoice is an invoice that is issued, transmitted and received in a structured, machine-readable format, which enables electronic processing. It must comply with EN16931.

An e-invoice contains the data of an invoice that was previously created and sent as a paper invoice or as a PDF. The information is usually transmitted as structured electronic data in an XML file.

Advantages of the e-invoice

As digitalization progresses in all areas of the company, e-invoicing offers decisive advantages over the previous approach:

  • Simpler invoicing thanks to the use of standards

  • Shorter processing times thanks to faster handling processes

  • Automated processing and more punctual payment

  • Cost savings thanks to savings on paper and postage

  • Flexible working; no location-based invoice receipt

  • More transparency

Timetable and dates

E-Invoice is coming

The e-invoicing obligation is part of the Growth Opportunities Act. This was adopted by the Federal Council on March 22, 2024. The new regulations with regard to the obligation to issue electronic invoices will apply from 01.01.2025.

In concrete terms, this means that companies must be able to receive and process e-invoices from 01.01.2025. The priority of paper invoices will no longer apply and other invoice formats may only be sent with the consent of the recipient.
